How to Edit Map Markers

How to Edit Map Markers

Markers are one of the core coordination tools in Airsoft Force Tracking — they let you mark objectives, threats, and points of interest directly on the map. This article walks through how to edit a marker step by step and what options the edit panel provides.

Opening the Marker Editor

To edit a marker, tap it on the map. This opens the properties panel with basic marker information. To enter edit mode, press the „Edit this marker” button.

This opens the edit window with the following fields:

  • Name — the marker’s name. Editable text field, can contain any description (e.g. „Rally point”, „Objective: Alpha”).
  • Army — the name of the army the marker belongs to. Read-only — a marker’s army ownership is set when it’s created.
  • Affiliation — the marker’s assignment within the army’s hierarchy. A marker can be moved up toward HQ or down toward operational teams. This affiliation affects which units can see the marker on the map — see map scope and hierarchy filtering.
  • Range — a value in meters. The map draws a circle of that radius around the marker’s position. Useful for objectives like „find the documents within 50 meters of the target” — it visually marks a search area without needing physical markings in the field.
  • Is hidden — a switch available only to members of the army’s HQ team. Lets HQ hide a marker from other factions while keeping it fully visible to HQ itself (shown in gray). This is useful for preparing objectives in advance: an organizer running the Administrative Army can place all mission markers before the game starts, mark them as hidden, and then reveal them one by one during the session simply by switching this off — instantly making the objective visible to all factions without needing to add markers on the fly.

Changing the Marker Icon

The edit screen also shows the marker’s icon. Tapping it opens an icon picker with two tabs:

  • Images — icons representing scenario and equipment elements, e.g. airplane, land mine, food, campfire, keys, ammo, store, fuel. Useful for marking points of interest tied to the scenario’s story.
  • Letters — icons A through Z, for marking objectives with codes (e.g. „A = Alpha”), useful for radio communication and position reporting.

Some icons are grayed out — unlocking them requires a PRO license.

How to Move Markers with Drag & Drop

To move a marker, press and hold it on the map for a moment. Once the marker is „picked up,” drag your finger to the desired location and release to drop the marker there. Its position updates immediately, both locally and for other players during the next sync.

This makes it quick to fine-tune objective placement, adjust positions on the fly, or correct a marker that was placed slightly off-target — all without leaving the map view.

Markers as Order Targets

Markers aren’t just visual references — they can also be used as targets for orders. When issuing an order such as Attack, Move, or Defend, a commander can assign it not only to a player or a team, but also to a marker. This makes it possible to direct units to a specific objective, threat, or point of interest without needing to pick a player position as the reference point.

For example, a commander can issue a „Defend” order targeting a marker placed on a key building, and all assigned units will see that marker as their objective on the map.

Marker Sync over Meshtastic

Markers are also synchronized between players over a Meshtastic connection, providing situational awareness even when GSM/internet connectivity is unavailable.

This sync covers both marker creation and marker updates, and includes all marker attributes — name, position, affiliation, range, icon, and the „Is hidden” state. This means that even in off-grid conditions, players connected via Meshtastic stay up to date with the full picture of markers on the map, not just a limited subset of data.

Permissions for Editing and Deleting Markers

  • Players can only delete markers belonging to their own army.
  • Administrators (Administrative Army) can delete markers from any army.
  • Markers belonging to the Administrative Army cannot be edited or deleted by anyone outside the administration.

This gives organizers full control over scenario-critical markers, while preventing players from accidentally — or intentionally — altering elements set up by HQ.

Markers are a core building block for planning and coordination in AFT — upcoming articles will cover hierarchy, ranges, and hidden markers in more depth.
